I DREAD TO IMAGINE THE FATE THAT AWAITED MY FAMILY AND ME

When I was diagnosed with stomach cancer in April 2015, my biggest concern was the financial burden of the treatment.

My meagre income as a worker in a bag manufacturing unit in Byculla was hardly enough to provide for my family of eight back in Motihari village, Bihar. I was living a hand to mouth existence and to pay for the surgery, I had to sell my slum in Govandi. It fetched me INR 3.20 lakh and that amount saw me through the surgery and first round of chemotherapy.

By July 2015, I had hardly any money left and was in no condition to seek work. This was when an NGO referred me to the N K Dhabhar Cancer Foundation. Over the last few months, the Foundation helped me undergo the remaining five cycles at a very low cost. They also helped me secure a discount for PET scans and other tests.

Without their support, I dread to imagine the fate that awaited my family and me. I am grateful for the help extended by NKDCF, without which my family would have been dire straits.
